From: Gene Coan <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Opening on Rivers Committee Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 08:35:14 -0700 Rivers Committee recruitment announcement The Wild Planet Strategy Team (WPST) seeks to appoint a new member to the Sierra Club's Rivers Committee. If you would like to nominate yourself for appointment please complete and return the application below by August 15, 2007. Self-nomination is required. The Rivers Committee operates under the WPST. The Rivers Committee is looking for volunteers to help advance the Club's work on river-related issues and seeks to fill a vacancy arising as a member who has served six years must rotate off for at least a year under Club term limits. The mission of the Sierra Club's Rivers Committee is to provide assistance to other volunteers in addressing river issues, build networks of activists working on these issues, and coordinate the Club's conservation efforts on these issues. River issues can include, but are not limited to: water rights, hydropower re-licensing, riparian zone management, river restoration, dam removal, dredging, locks, wild and scenic river management and designation (both state and federal programs), and all related issues. The Rivers Committee works to educate, support, and advise local activists and others in designing and implementing policies and practices related to the above issues and promote stewardship and the right of public involvement in river management decisions. In order to carry out these objectives the Rivers Committee pursues the following: 1. Developing an activist network and facilitating information exchange among network members. 2. Keeping network members informed on legislation and agency policy matters related to river issues. 3. Helping develop and implement strategy to deal with river issues from defensive and proactive positions as appropriate, including raising the visibility of river issues in the Club. 4. Developing contacts with other environmental and citizen's groups working on river issues where such contacts would be helpful to activists and further the Club's agenda. Committee members need to be able to evaluate issues from a variety of viewpoints. Committee business is conducted primarily via e-mail and conference calls. The Rivers Committee meets once monthly by conference call and annually in person. This committee does or will coordinate with the ongoing work of other Sierra Club entities such as the National Parks Committee, Wildlands Committee, Canyons of the Colorado River Committee, Water Committee, Southwest Water Committee, Global Warming and Energy Committee, and Wildlife and Endangered Species Committee. Candidates for the Rivers Committee should have at least general knowledge of water management issues and the motivation to work on resolving them. The skills and experience needed cover a number areas including: experience with the Club's planning matrix, knowledge of complex water issues, dam removal campaigns, hydropower licensing and other energy issues. No member of the Rivers Committee is expected to have expertise in all topics, but specialized expertise is welcome, as is familiarity with Sierra Club policies and processes at the national level. Candidates should have good management and social skills, as well as political and strategic judgment, and be current Sierra Club members residing in the United States. Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in conference calls (generally in the evening) are required as well as the ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences. Candidates need to consider their ability to contribute time and effort to Rivers Committee participation in addition to ongoing commitments. If you are interested in applying, please read and follow the instructions completely. We are only accepting self-nominations, so, please, pass this announcement on to others you think may have an interest. Sierra Club of Canada (SCC) members are not eligible to apply to this announcement.
