Hello Sierra Club members and friends! As many of you know, we are very excited to be launching a Global Warming statewide citizen's petition effort this year in conjunction with the United Steelworkers.
This petition is more than a way to communicate our message to the public and to our leaders - it's also a great opportunity for us to build power for the Club's Chapter and Groups here in Iowa. Every person who identifies with our issues and signs the petition will go into our Club database; and becomes a potential volunteer activist for our efforts statewide. This is a chance to increase our effectiveness exponentially by expanding our influence and outreach beyond our existing membership.
With that in mind, it is our hope that all the Iowa Groups will actively participate in this effort to engage everyone they meet and collect as many petitions as possible. To encourage this effort, create excitement and help build power for the Groups and Chapter, our campaign is offering to hold a major event at our expense for any Group that reaches the goal of one thousand petitions. The event can be anything you want it to be - barbeque or cookout, party or any other event members can think of to bring people out for a good time and share our message.
There is no firm deadline for reaching the goal - we know that some of the groups are without many of their members during the summer 'vacation' months. We will be in contact with each group to confirm where to send the literature and petitions; and to ask if there is anything else we can do to help such as providing up-to-date membership lists or just answering questions.
If you need any assistance, have any questions or would like to receive a bundle of the literature and petitions, please feel free to contact me at any time - I'm here to help in any way I can.
Best,
Andrew
The petition reads as follows:
OUTSIDE: Join the Growing Number of Americans Committed to a Clean Energy Environment
TEXT OF PETITION:
Yes, I support the 2% Solution to Fight Global Warming and Save American Jobs.
Global Warming is real and it's
happening faster than anyone predicted, while American jobs are being
outsourced faster than anybody feared possible. To meet these
challenges, we're calling on our leaders to build a clean energy
economy here at home and support worker's rights and environmental
standards in trade agreements. Specifically, we're asking you to
initiate policies that:
- Cut carbon emissions by a very doable 2% a year - 80% by the year 2050;
- Create 2 million new jobs in renewable energy and energy efficient industries; and
- Require trade agreements to include enforceable workers' rights and environmental standards
