(605) 773-3485 Why Jeff Vonk should win the award: Jeff Vonk showed political courage unprecedented in Iowa during this past year. He stood up for Iowa's natural resources in the face of overwhelming criticism from industrial agriculture. Vonk worked with EPC to enact the DNR flexibility rule to provide some means to address the most egregious environmental concerns in the siting of new industrial livestock facilities. Yet, Jeff Vonk advocated for local control over CAFO siting, preferring to give siting authority to local citizens rather than become a "czar" as he was so often falsely accused. Rather than compromise his principles in an effort to save his job, Jeff fought for Iowa's natural resources right up to the day he was fired - fired for protecting the environment, I would suggest. For that, I nominate Jeff Vonk to receive the 2007 Sierra Club public service award. Public Service Award - For a legislative or governmental employee or appointee who has contributed significantly to environmental issues directly affecting Iowa.
