Congress Should Not Rush on Weak Global Warming Bills
Warner-Lieberman Bill Focuses on Needs of Industry, Not Environment

Statement of Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director

"There have now been a variety of bills introduced in both the House and
the Senate designed to regulate and reduce global warming emissions on an
economy-wide basis.  Unfortunately, the Warner-Lieberman bill introduced
today is yet another entrant that falls short of the finish line in the
race against global warming.

"We believe that any global warming bill passed by Congress must go far
enough, fast enough to avert the most catastrophic effects of global
warming. According to scientists, this means we need to reduce our global
warming emissions 80 percent by 2050--an achievable average annual
reduction of 2 percent.  Both the Boxer-Sanders bill in the Senate and the
Waxman bill in the House meet this challenge.

"The Warner-Lieberman proposal and others are oriented toward meeting the
needs of the coal, utility and auto industries.  Congress should instead
focus on proposals like Boxer-Sanders and Waxman that better meet the needs
of communities, families, and the environment."
