National Call to Action:

"Commit to Conservation" Call-In Day

Thousands of people are expected to participate in a "Commit to Conservation" call-in on Wednesday, October 17.

We're asking that you to call Iowa Senators Grassley and Harkin: (202) 224-3121

Conservation is under attack in the Senate! When the Senate Finance Committee provided $3 billion in outlays from conservation tax credits for the Conservation Reserve Program and the Grasslands Reserve Program, it fell far short of the minimum amount of money needed to adequately fund our nation's conservation needs.

Here's the message:

"I care about conservation programs and I call on the Senate to provide $5 billion in additional funding for conservation in the 2007 Farm Bill."

There's a backlog of farmers who have applied to participate, but cannot due to lack of sufficient funding. To protect our water quality, air quality and wildlife habitat, it is time to ask the Senate for a commitment to at least $5 billion in additional funding for conservation to begin addressing the unmet needs and keep existing programs in operation.

Iowa farmer Jim Andrew says he will call his Senators. "Sometimes it takes a great number of people, not only farmers, but others in the local community that are affected by water quality, have concerns about wildlife habitat for hunting or just for the existence of different species of wildlife-everybody- needs to pick up their telephone and call the Senate switchboard," Andrew says.

Telephone the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. A switchboard operator will connect you directly with the Senator's office you request.

Thank you for taking action to protect water quality!
