Doug Berven, director of corporate affairs for Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Poet, reacted to recent headlines blaming ethanol for rising food prices and environmental damage, just as Congress debates whether to require more use of biofuels. A U.N. official last week said producing biofuels from food crops was "a crime against humanity."

Washington, D.C. -- The Bush administration threatened to veto the Senate's $288 billion farm bill Monday, saying it's paid for with tax increases and budget gimmicks and fails to reform crop subsidies.
President Bush had already threatened to veto the version of the bill passed by the House this summer. The Senate started debate on its bill Monday.

St. Louis-based Monsanto Co. will invest $230 million expanding its Iowa operations over the next two years, including building a DeKalb seed conditioning plant in northeast Iowa.
The expansion is the company's largest in seven years and will double its Iowa corn seed production. In addition to a new plant, the world's largest seed producer will expand DeKalb seed conditioning plants in Boone and Grinnell. It's also wrapping up an expansion at its research facility in Ankeny.
