Des Moines, IA.
REAP stands for Resource Enhancement and
Protection. It is a program in Iowa that invests in for the enhancement and
protection of the state’s natural and cultural resources. It is funded from the
state’s general fund and by receipts from the sale of the natural resource
license plates.
REAP is your local, grassroots conservation program, guided by your
local interests for your local needs.
These are open public meetings where REAP programs and associated
projects are presented.
The creators of REAP in 1989 believed that it was vital to provide plenty
of opportunities for interested citizens and organizations throughout Iowa to be
actively involved in this program. We should use this opportunity they gave us
to help ensure that the available funds are used for the best advantage possible
for Iowa’s natural and cultural resources.
REAP provides money for projects through state agency budgets or in the
form of grants. After $350,000 each year for conservation education and 1% for
DNR administration, the remaining funds go to seven different programs,
allocated according to percentages set by the law. These are:
/fontfamily>• /fontfamily>28% DNR for land acquisition and
development (Open Spaces)
/fontfamily>• /fontfamily>20% County Conservation Boards
/fontfamily>• /fontfamily>20% Soil and Water Enhancement
/fontfamily>• /fontfamily>15% City Parks and Open Space
/fontfamily>• /fontfamily>9% DNR Land Management (mostly
parks)
/fontfamily>• /fontfamily>5% Historical Resources
/fontfamily>• /fontfamily>3% Roadside Vegetation
