Sierra Club Decries Filibuster of Energy Bill
Small Minority Blocks Progress; Turns Backs on Constituents
Suffering Under Energy High Costs

Washington, D.C.--After passing the House yesterday by a vote of 235-181,
H.R. 6, the landmark energy bill failed to achieve the 60 votes necessary
to overcome a Republican-led filibuster in Senate. The vote on the cloture
motion was 53 to 42.

Statement of Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director

"It is extremely disappointing that after a resounding victory in the House
just yesterday, a few senators have chosen to block America's way forward
in favor of the outdated energy industries of the past. It is
unconscionable that a small group of senators are determined to block a
historic clean energy bill whose individual provisions are both popular and
demanded by a majority of Americans.

"Senators voting against this measure are not only standing in the way of a
clean energy future, but are also turning their backs on the hardworking
American families who are suffering under the skyrocketing energy costs
brought on by decades of failed energy policies.

"When this measure is brought up again--as we expect it soon will be, we
hope that the Senate chooses to side with the best interests of their
constituents instead of the wishes of polluting special interests
determined to stop progress at all costs."
