BROKEN SEWER LINE LEADS TO GOLDFIELD DISCHARGE

GOLDFIELD — A broken sewer line in Goldfield led to a wastewater bypass to Buttermilk Creek early Monday morning.
The City of Goldfield, located in Wright County, estimates the wastewater began discharging around midnight and stopped around 8:00 a.m. The discharge sent an unknown amount of untreated wastewater into Buttermilk Creek, which flows into the Boone River.
The city is repairing the sewer line. The DNR is requiring the city to sample water in the Boone River for ammonia, bacteria and oxygen levels. The Des Moines Water Works and Ottumwa water supply have been notified of the bypass.
