THE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE: REQUEST FOR APPLICANTS The Environmental Justice Committee (EJC) is seeking candidates withexperience and/or expertise, plus a strong interest, in the followingareas: civil rights; civil liberties; the environmental justiceimplications of issues such as climate change, toxics, waste,transportation, sprawl, Superfund and wildlands; providing tools andtraining on Environmental Justice and Community Organizing for Chapters andGroups; and serving as a resource to Club activists working on the Club'sconservation issues, political campaigns, and organizational effectiveness. Service on the EJC requires a genuine commitment of time and energy.Activists who are already over-committed -- as many of our best leaders are-- may be asked to give up some of their current commitments in order toserve effectively as a Committee member.  For a better idea of the work wedo, please review the description of EJC below and the list ofqualifications for appointment that precede the application form below. Selection of a minimum of four (4) committee members will be based onseveral criteria, including: (1) enthusiasm for environmental justiceactivism; (2) relevant area of interest and/or expertise; (3) geographiclocation; (4) willingness to work for an integrated program ofenvironmental justice in the Sierra Club; (5) commitment to remain activeon the committee for at least two years; (6) ability to communicateeffectively orally and electronically; and (7) capacity to work both aspart of a team and as an individual activist (while remaining in contactwith the committee for guidance and consent). Appointments to the EJC are made by The Environmental Quality Strategy Team(EQST, part of the Conservation Governance Committee, CGC), based on theapplication and phone interviews with prospective candidates. QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT We encourage people of color, activists of all ages, and both rural andurban activists to apply.  Those that have experience as part of or workingwith communities of color and/or economically disadvantaged communities areespecially encouraged to apply, as are applicants who live in the centralcontiguous US or west of the Mississippi River. Our committee seeks those with (1) administrative skills, including budgetmanagement; (2) understanding and experience with environmental litigation;(3) training expertise; (4) organizing expertise; (4) writing experience;(5) desktop publishing; (6) fundraising as well as other professionalexperience and (7) chapter and/or national committee Club experience. Use of electronic mail and participation in monthly conference calls(generally in the evening) are required.  EJC and EQST will assist anexceptional candidate who does not have and cannot afford email access.Also, ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences isimportant.  (Transportation and lodging expenses are reimbursed by theEJC.)
