Beginning with the Iowa Arts Festival June 6-8, 2008, ALL of our food vendors on “Culinary Row” are using biodegradable and compostable food ware and we need your help as a GREEN TEAM Volunteer to help those attending our festival recycle the items correctly. Here’s what you can do: Become one of our Green Team Volunteers who will wear our special FREE green volunteer t-shirt and will be positioned near each recycling station to help make the recycling process easy for everyone! Make sure people throw their compostable plates, bowls, forks and cups (with leftovers and all) into the containers marked for compostable items located throughout the festival. If people have any questions about whether their food container is compostable they will be able to ask one of our Green Team Volunteers. We also offer recycling for soda cans and plastic bottles! How will composting make a difference? In 2007 nearly 3 tons of garbage from the Iowa Arts Festival and Toyota-Scion of Iowa City Jazz Festival ended up in the landfills Our goal for 2008 is to cut our garbage waste by 75% through our composting efforts. All of the compost will be used to make fertile soil to support a healthier local environment. You can purchase composted soil at the Johnson County Landfill to use in your garden at home! To Volunteer for the Green Team, or any other position please visit our Summer of the Arts website at www.summerofthearts.org and click on the Volunteer Now button. From there you can click on our volunteer online button, to fill out and submit the online volunteer application. A staff member from Summer of the Arts will contact you to confirm your availability for a specific shift/position.
