DNR ASKS FARMERS TO DISPOSE OF SAND AND SOIL AWAY FROM STREAMS

DES MOINES - As floodwaters have swept through the state, they've left many
landowners wondering what to do with silt, sand and debris left behind in
farm fields.

The DNR is recommending that farmers do not move any debris, sand or
sediment into the stream, as it can build upon the problems many Iowans are
already facing. If it's placed in the stream and washes away, it can cause
damage downstream. Or, it can settle in place and cause water to backup into
upland areas.

Placement of sand and debris into or near the stream may also be in
violation of state and federal flood plain and water quality regulations.

Landowners can call Kelly Stone at (515) 281-4312 or Annie Hartman at (515)
281-8979 with questions on options and approval requirements.

"In many instances, DNR staff can assist landowners in finding an acceptable
disposal site that will have an insignificant effect on flood flows and may
not require a flood plain permit," said Kelly Stone with the DNR floodplain
program. "We're considering landowner's requests for assistance as high
priority and will review them as quickly as we can."

Landowners can help by identifying the type of debris and providing an
aerial photo that shows the debris deposits and proposed or possible
disposal areas. Information can be sent to Kelly Stone at
