Iowa Department of Natural Resources Environmental Services Division For Immediate Release June 10, 2008 DNR ISSUES BOIL ADVISORY FOR MAYNARD MEDIA CONTACT: Joe Sanfilippo, DNR Manchester field office, (563) 927-2640 (office) or (563) 920-2696 (cell) DES MOINES — The DNR is advising residents in the Fayette County town of Maynard to boil their water before using it for drinking or cooking. The city was repairing a water main Tuesday when the main broke, causing the town’s drinking water system to lose pressure. Due to the potential for bacterial contamination, the DNR is recommending that residents on the west side of Maynard boil water or use an alternative source of water. Residents should boil water used for drinking or cooking, brushing teeth, food preparation or any other purpose involving human consumption. City water may still be used for bathing. Residents with questions about the advisory can contact Gary Reed, the city’s water operator, at (563) 419-3256. Boiling destroys bacteria and disease-causing organisms, which may be in the water. Water should be brought to a boil, boiled one minute and then allowed to cool before using. More information on disinfecting water is available on the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791. Residents should continue to boil their water until the DNR notifies them that water is meeting standards and is safe to drink. The DNR will lift the boil advisory after all samples have tested negative for the presence of bacteria. Maynard’s boil advisory is not related to flooding. Other communities in Iowa may be under boil advisories or not have operational drinking water systems. These cities may have issued boil orders due to flooding problems that have contaminated or potentially contaminated their water supplies. These communities have been notifying their residents of any special orders, advisories or warnings.
