DES MOINES — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will now be accepting applications from independent redemption centers seeking funds from the Independent Redemption Center Grants Program.

The 2008 Iowa Legislature passed the program into law, allocating $1 million to create a grants program for improvements to independent beverage container redemption centers. The program will be administered by the DNR.

“The intent was to get funding out to the redemption centers as quickly as possible, so we used the emergency rulemaking process in order to expedite the awarding of grants,” said Bill Blum, DNR program planner.

The application deadline is October 3, 2008, and grants will be determined by October 17, 2008. Grant applicants should address the goals of sustainability, convenience and/or accessibility.

“We’re looking for improvements that will make centers successful over the long term, make the redemption process more convenient for customers, and make the facilities more accessible,” said Blum.
