Statement of Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope

"The Bush administration sat by while oil imports increased, gas prices
rose, and global warming became more and more threatening. On every front,
this administration has assaulted the fundamental laws protecting our clean
water, air, forests, and wildlife."

On EPA:
"When California and other states attempted to act on their own to combat
global warming, the EPA fought them. Under this administration, the EPA has
dragged its feet in setting emission standards for dozens of toxic air
pollutants and has ignored the recommendations of its own scientists in
setting public health standards."

On the Endangered Species Act:
"On its way out of town, the Bush administration is making one last, hasty
assault on the Endangered Species Act. After years of working around the
law and trampling science, the Interior Department is now eliminating the
scientific consultation provision that serves as the backbone of the
Endangered Species Act."

On the Minerals Management Service:
"It's clear that the mineral leasing program of this administration has
been marked by corruption and a stunning lack of respect for the law.
However, the Inspector General has repeatedly blown the whistle on the
Minerals Management Service, most recently exposing the agencies scandalous
and inappropriate relationship with the oil industry."

On the Forest Service:
"The Bush administration has attempted to block public participation in
forest planning, destroy biological diversity in Southeastern forests,
clear cut the Tongass National Forest, and hand over our forests to the
timber industry."
