BOIL ADVISORY ISSUED FOR LIVERMORE IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY

LIVERMORE — A boil advisory is in effect for the city of Livermore in Humboldt County following repairs to its drinking water system.

 

The city’s drinking water operator discovered a leak in the water tower’s riser pipe Monday, leading the city to drain the tower to make repairs. The city maintained pressure in the system with well pumps. However, a leaky valve in a detention tank caused the pumps to shut off for 15 minutes on Tuesday, creating a loss of pressure and risk for potential bacterial contamination.

 

The DNR recommends that residents boil the water before using it for drinking or cooking, or to use an alternative source of water. Residents should boil water used for drinking or cooking, brushing teeth, food preparation or any other purpose involving human consumption. City water may still be used for bathing.

 

Boiling destroys bacteria and disease-causing organisms, which may be in the water. Water should be brought to a boil, boiled one minute and then allowed to cool before using. More information on disinfecting water is available on the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791. 

 

Residents should continue to boil their water until the DNR notifies them that water is meeting standards and is safe to drink. The DNR will lift the boil advisory after all samples have tested negative for the presence of bacteria.

 

The city is currently making repairs to system and plans to replace the entire riser pipe to improve weak areas.
