Background Information
In August 2008, the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) released the first draft of a unique Standard for sustainable biofuel production. This document – called “Version Zero”- is the result of an impressive work achieved by several hundreds of participants from 40 countries and all sectors, which have joined the RSB since April 2007, in order to debate and reach a consensus on a set of generic principles and criteria to be followed by biofuel producers in order for their production to remain genuinely sustainable.
This ‘Version Zero’ includes 12 principles and criteria, which cover the environmental, social and economic issues related to biofuels, as revealed over the last years until now. Yet, this draft needs to be further improved and refined; the RSB has now entered into a period of public comment, and is organizing regional consultations throughout the world from January to March 2009 in order for all stakeholders to participate and share their valuable opinions. Are there aspects missing from the document? Is the phrasing correct? What is needed to correctly implement these principles and criteria? These are examples of questions that regional consultations will help the RSB to solve.
Should you be interested in participating, please save the date and let us know by returning the RSVP form by FAX or email at your earliest convenience.
It is important that you be familiar with Version Zero prior to the meeting.
We look forward to meeting you in Iowa and Washington DC!
