QUICK ACTION PREVENTS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT TO AUDUBON COUNTY STREAM

AUDUBON - Quick action by the crew of a livestock producer Thursday night prevented potentially serious environmental impact to Indian Creek.

The pits of a confinement building owned by Lawrence Handlos near Audubon were being emptied by pumps when a line ruptured resulting in approximately 2,000 gallons of liquid manure reaching Indian Creek. Excavators who were on site doing other work immediately constructed a dam across the creek to contain the manure.

The manure-contaminated water behind the dam was pumped out and land applied to crop fields nearby. In all approximately 500,000 gallons from the creek were pumped and land applied.

Environmental specialists from the Iowa DNR were on site Thursday night, testing the water on both sides of the dam. It was determined that through the pumping activities, little impact from the spill remained in Indian Creek. The spill was contained and pumped in time to prevent a fish kill.

"The facilities quick and aggressive response resulted in little impact to Indian Creek. Without this response, Indian Creek would have been seriously impacted. This is a good reminder for facilities utilizing umbilical lines to routinely monitor them for holes or leaks," said Ryan Young, environmental specialist for the DNR's Atlantic Field Office.
