CORALVILLE: The Coralville wastewater treatment plant has been forced to do a full bypass due to a failed control room at the facility.
A waterline break, early Sunday morning, in the control room of the facility damaged equipment enough to cause a complete shutdown. Consequently, the city estimates it will be discharging up to 3 million gallons of wastewater per day until repairs are made. The extent of the damage is being evaluated and an estimate of repair completion is not yet available.
The discharge is to Clear Creek, a tributary of the Iowa River. The city of Coralville is handling notification of those impacted by the bypass. People are asked to avoid contact with water from either Clear Creek or the Iowa River in the Coralville/Iowa City area. The DNR will take water samples upstream and downstream of the bypass.
