ANAMOSA NO LONGER DISCHARGING PARTIALLY TREATED SEWAGE TO WAPSIPINCON

ANAMOSA - Construction on a filter to the wastewater treatment facility in Anamosa has been completed and the city is no longer discharging partially treated sewage into the Wapsipinicon River.

The city had been discharging partially treated sewage since March when work began on a portion of the facility's filtering system. Since that time, the city had not been meeting any of their discharge limits, including e.coli. The violation was discovered by an unannounced inspection by the DNR in April.

"The system is in place and should be effectively filtering bacteria now," said Mike Wade of the DNR's field office in Manchester.

Wade said he is pleased that the work got done prior to the Memorial Day weekend because of the proximity of Wapsipinicon State Park down stream.

The DNR is planning to take enforcement action against the city of Anamosa for violations of the discharge permit and failing to report the problem.

For more information, contact Mike Wade at 563-927-2640.
