LT. GOVERNOR PATTY JUDGE TO CALL FOR GREATER PARTICIPATION BY WOMEN ON BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR Governor Chet Culver Lt. Governor Patty Judge July 14, 2009 LT. GOVERNOR PATTY JUDGE TO CALL FOR GREATER PARTICIPATION BY WOMEN ON BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS Tomorrow, Lt. Governor Patty Judge will call on Iowa's women to donate their time and energy and participate in a local board or commission and announce state guides that will assist women in learning more about these opportunities. Most local boards and commissions are not gender balanced, and some, like Planning and Zoning, tend to be overwhelmingly of one gender or the other. According to a survey by the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, women make up only 18% of all membership across four economically related county boards. Earlier this year, Governor Chet Culver signed into law House File 243, a bill that will require gender balance on all local boards and commissions by January 1, 2012. This law will help increase the voice of women in government, develop community leadership, and help ensure that government boards and commissions are more representative of Iowans.
