KANAWHA – The DNR is investigating a fish kill reported about 3:30 p.m. Friday and located 2.5 miles west of Kanawha in southern Hancock County.
A man checking his minnow trap on the East Branch of the Boone River reported the fish kill to the DNR after he found dead minnows in the trap and dead carp nearby.
DNR investigators arrived at the scene about 4:30 p.m. and found dead fish for about one mile downstream of the initial location. Below that, they were seeing both live and stressed fish in the stream at about 6 p.m.
The water looked clear and there were no obvious indications of the cause of the fish kill. DNR staff collected water samples and will await laboratory test results to identify the pollutant.
The DNR will continue to investigate and monitor the situation.
