KEOKUK – Workers at Roquette America, Inc., in Keokuk discovered an overflow of untreated corn protein slurry Monday afternoon during a shift change.

The company discovered the problem about 4 p.m. and immediately stopped the overflow. However, a company representative estimates about 11,000 gallons reached the Mississippi River.

The release was reported to the DNR about 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The company plans to clean filters on the tank, investigate the cause of the overflow and report the results to the DNR.

Wastewater bypasses caused by mechanical failures must be reported to the DNR within 12 hours of onset or discovery of the problem.

The DNR may consider enforcement action.
