PBS presentation of the life of John Muir highlighted the reasons many of us, who feel exactly as Muir did about wilderness and wildlife,--for many wilderness is the core of our spiritual being--joined Sierra Club. We wanted to protect wilderness and wildlife. The program also highlighted differences of opinions among Sierra club members--almost a third of Sierra Club members living in San Francisco voted to damn a valley in a national park! Not much has changed, and despite differences of opinion, we're still fighting the same battles to save some of the last remaining pristine wilderness now called the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In the Arctic Refuge you can still experience nature as it was created, free of human manipulation. I think enough of us are filled with the spirit of John Muir and we will succeed as members of a greater Alaska Wilderness Coalition.
