Iowa Wildlife Center Year of the Turtle! Date: Sunday, May 8, 2011 (Mother's Day!) Time: 1:00-5:00 p.m. Location: Iowa Wildlife Center's WildWay (1/2 mi. south of Ledges State Park) Who? Iowa Wildlife Center, Iowa State University Wildlife Extension, Blank Park Zoo, Iowa Herpetological Society & more! What? A family-friendly event to learn more about turtles of Iowa and around the globe, the conservation threats to these animals, and actions we can take to better conserve Iowa's turtles. Why Now? 2011 has been proclaimed as the Year of the Turtle by the International Union for the Conservation of Natural Re-sources. We want to draw attention to the conservation threats facing turtles. Why Mothers' Day? Turtles have played roles in Native American creation myths and the fact that "mother" turtles are at in-creased risk of some conservation threats, such as that posed by roads. Event Activities: For adults: Turtles of Iowa Impacts of a 2010 River Oil Spill Iowa's Turtle Regulations Turtle Conservation Activities of the Blank Park Zoo For children and families: Story circle with turtle-themed stories Child-friendly turtle talk Turtle rehabilitation activity Turtle songs & crafts Live turtle display We will hold two silent auctions and sell turtle-themed treats during the event to raise funds for The Iowa Wildlife Center's "Raise the Ribs" building campaign!
