Just as news of money for more staff to fight coal plants in IA is exciting, another win in Canada where I just returned from 6 weeks exploring the Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness, parts of the Stikine River Provincial Park. (got stopped dead from exploring Mt Edziza Park because of high rivers and flooding). Sierra Club helped stop two very large dams in the Grand Canyon of the Stikine so I got to experience the mighty Stikine still wild and free as John Muir saw it years ago. What a positive experience to work through Sierra Club with others to protect what we value. Sometimes we win! Below is an excerpt how these damns were stopped. Phyllis The Stewart-Cassiar Highway brought the first of two bridges over the river in the early 1970s. The second dame with an untracked rail grade connecting Dease Lake with Prince George. By 1980, BC Hydro was actively engaged in groundwork for two very large dams in the Grand Canyon of the Stikine. These were part of a mega-project that included three more dams for the Stikine's major tributary - the Iskut River. Local concern, with help from the Sierra Club of Western Canada, was taken to Vancouver, where, in 1981, Friends of the Stikine came into being -- dedicated to "preservation of the Stikine River in its natural state." - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To unsubscribe from the IOWA-TOPICS list, send any message to: [log in to unmask] Check out our Listserv Lists support site for more information: http://www.sierraclub.org/lists/faq.asp To view the Sierra Club List Terms & Conditions, see: http://www.sierraclub.org/lists/terms.asp
