Dow AgroSciences LLC, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW),
and M.S. Technologies LLC announced today a collaborative submission to the
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the approval of the first-ever,
three-gene herbicide-tolerant soybean.
This new soybean event developed by the companies includes, for the first
time, three herbicide tolerance genes stacked as part of a single genetic
event in the soybean genome. These genes provide tolerance to Dow
AgroSciences' new 2,4-D product, glyphosate, and glufosinate, which combined
make-up the EnlistT Weed Control System.

COMMENT: Creating a genetic cassette - a "trait package" they're calling it
- which confers resistance to multiple herbicides is almost as smart as
doctors purposely creating a multiply-drug-resistant form of a disease germ.
With all the square miles on which these "traits" are grown, the trillions
of plant cells, the trillions of root nodules, the quadrillions of grains of
pollen, the rare, one in a billion events which can spread the trait into
new multiply-herbicide-resistant weeds are a certainty. This may be a
smart way to grow profits (for Dow and MS) but it's a bad way to grow food
for people and a wrong turn for agriculture.
