We also need to stop building highways.
For the past 65 years US policy, in effect, has been: highways are to
build; railroads are to abandon. That needs to be reversed.
In the past six years the Des Moines freeway, I-235, has been massively
rebuilt to carry more lanes of car traffic. The freeway was a mistake when
originally built. Now we have dug ourselves in deeper. And many square miles
of the best farmland in the world have been destroyed by the urban sprawl
that the freeway facilitated.
We will be serious about stopping climate change when we stop building
more automobile infrastructure.
