> I wanted you to be one of the first to see the Club's response to the =
news that President Obama announced that he is slowing down the Keystone =
XL tar sands pipeline which will lead to what is anticipated to be a 12 =
to 18 month delay. While this isn't an outright rejection, it is a win =
and we are confident that once the true environmental costs of this =
project are properly evaluated, it will be the end for the Keystone XL =
pipeline. Conventional wisdom just a few short months ago said that =
this pipeline was a done deal. =20

   Continuing to invest enormous sums of money in infrastructure that =
will keep us committed to outdated forms of energy and technology is not =
a smart strategy to move us to a new energy future: one that doesn't =
cause public health problems, frees us from oil from countries that are =
a security problem for the US and thus handcuffing our foreign policy =
and sending hundreds of billions of dollars overseas that could be =
invested here instead (I know some of you will say that this is what the =
pipeline is designed to do but, doubling down on oil will only keep us =
addicted to it and we can NEVER produce enough domestically to become =
independent from imports), protects our fragile and diminishing =
ecosystems and dramatically reduces our production of CO2. =20

> Here is the statement that the Club put out today.
>=20
> State Dept. Announces Reevaluation of Keystone XL Tar Sand Pipeline=20
>=20
> Washington, D.C. - The State Department announced today that it is =
reevaluating the environmental review of the Keystone XL tar sands =
pipeline project. The reevaluation will include consideration of =
rerouting the pipeline to avoid sensitive ecological areas in Nebraska. =
An alternative route would require a new environmental impact statement =
and would delay a final decision on the tar sands pipeline for as long =
as 18 months.
>=20
> In response, Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club, =
issued the following statement:
>=20
> =93The mere fact that the State Department is slowing down and taking =
a look at the dirty Keystone XL tar sands pipeline is hugely =
encouraging. We commend President Obama for listening to the American =
people and putting the brakes on what would have been a disaster for =
millions of Americans who want clean air, clean water and good health =
for their families.
>=20
> =93The Sierra Club is confident that when the State Dept. evaluates =
the true costs of this dirty project =96 threats to water supplies and =
ecologically sensitive areas, destruction of the boreal forest, =
dangerous carbon emissions, unsafe pipelines, and increased cancer and =
respiratory illnesses in communities like Port Arthur and Houston, Texas =
=96 they will reject this pipeline. =20
>=20
> =93Today=92s announcement is a death knell for the Keystone XL tar =
sand pipeline and lands a considerable blow to Big Oil, their lobbyists, =
and their campaign of lies to keep Americans addicted to oil.
>=20
> =93Our continued addiction to oil will only destroy our land, air, =
water and health while keeping Americans shackled to the gas pump and =
beholden to Big Oil. That's why it's imperative that we invest in =
American innovation and 21st Century transportation solutions like =
smarter, more fuel-efficient cars and trucks, electric vehicles and =
transit to truly achieve energy security and a clean energy economy =
beyond oil.=94
