FISH KILL
INVESTIGATED IN HANCOCK COUNTY
BRITT
– A fish kill in Hancock County west of Britt is being investigated by the Iowa
Department of Natural Resources.
Approximately one-and-a-half to
two miles of the headwaters of the Boone River has been affected by the fish
kill. The fish are smaller, minnow-type species.
The
fish kill appears to have originated from the North Central Coop facility at
Hutchins, west of Britt. It is believed that two tanks of water that had been
used during the process of emptying a storage tank were poured out on the
driveway. Approximately 300 gallons of water containing some ammonia entered a
tile line which ran to the headwaters of the Boone River.
The
DNR was still on the scene Saturday afternoon to determine the extent of the
fish kill.
