I do not at all know many of you, but always worth a try to spread the word of our activities. Received the below Backbone condition email from Dave Hanson who lives near Masonville. (He had reported earlier about seeing swans and a eagle/hawk battle over a deer carcass at Backbone!) With the expected additional snowfall, Backbone MIGHT become more attractive J. It sure is coming down out here south of Dubuque right now!! A cancellation, due to a health care issue of an elderly relative, has resulted in both bedrooms being available in our Cabin #10, both nights. Four guys are still on the roster and do not need bedroom space. Day-use on Saturday is also still an option. Check with me for accommodation and other details this afternoon or evening (I may be away today from 7-9 PM); or tomorrow (Thursday); or Friday forenoon if you feel like giving the outing a try. J (Home: 563-582-2580. Cell: 563-590-2557.) I will also have my cell phone with me AT Backbone on Friday after 4 PM, through Sunday at 1 PM. The crevice slide will now be negotiated on snow, instead of leaves! J I usually use snowshoes to get around off-trail and such at Backbone when snow conditions are decent.. and it’s looking good. (See two attached photos: Backbone 2012, x-country skiers and the crevice!) OTHER UPDATES: 1. At our Tues., Jan. 22, program/meeting, the EXCOM set November 9 as the date for our Turkey Dinner Fundraiser. Mark your calendar. Lynette Seigley, a forever Project AWARE staff leader who will this year be the coordinator of Project AWARE, will give the program about Project AWARE achievements during its 11-year run since its beginning on the Maquoketa River in 2003. Three or four $20 donations could help us utilize an offer to provide organic turkey’s at cost for this year’s meal. 2. Project AWARE 2013: Will be July 6-13, on the Des Moines River from Algona to Lehigh (just south of Fort Dodge.) White Pine Sierrans Dick Worm and Jim Fahrion from near Dubuque and Nathan Lein from Oelwein usually attend. Check http://www.iowaprojectaware.com/ 3. “Month West” trip optionshave now added a second Colorado Fourteener, Mt. Princeton, to the list (with 4-wheeler support to the hiking finale for each): Mt. The warm weather dissolved most of the remaining snow, but last night we received about 2” of snow so far. The trails should be frozen by the weekend, maybe bring a pair of yaktraks or some other form of anti slip for the feet. I’m gonna dig out my ice skates just in case the ice is smooth on the lake. Maybe there will be enough snow for skiing or snowshoes.
