NOTE: Below is yet another study throwing into question the reliability of=
=20
regulatory classifications of glyphosate and Roundup.
The levels of Roundup and glyphosate found in this study to be toxic to=20
Daphnia magna, the water flea, are minuscule and are well within levels=20
expected to be found in the environment.
But glyphosate is classed by regulators as =E2=80=9Cpractically nontoxic=
=E2=80=9D to=20
aquatic invertebrates.
Daphnia magna is a widely accepted model for environmental toxicity.
This study follows an earlier study by some of the same authors which=20
showed that Bt maize fed to daphnia magna reduced their fitness:

Abstract
Low levels of glyphosate based herbicide induced significant negative=20
effects on the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna. Glyphosate herbicides s=
uch=20
as brands of Roundup, are known to be toxic to daphnids. However, publishe=
d=20
findings on acute toxicity show significant discrepancies and variation=20
across several orders of magnitude. To test the acute effects of both=20
glyphosate and a commercial formulation of Roundup (hereafter Roundup), we=
=20
conducted a series of exposure experiments with different clones and age-c=
lasses of=20
D. magna. The results demonstrated EC50 (48) values in the low ppm-range=
=20
for Roundup as well as for the active ingredient (a.i.) isopropylamine sal=
t=20
of glyphosate (glyphosate IPA) alone. Roundup showed slightly lower acute=
=20
toxicity than glyphosate IPA alone, i.e. EC50 values of 3.7=E2=80=9310.6 m=
g a.i./l,=20
as compared to 1.4=E2=80=937.2 mg a.i./l for glyphosate IPA. However, in c=
hronic=20
toxicity tests spanning the whole life-cycle, Roundup was more toxic. D.=
=20
magna was exposed to sublethal nominal concentrations of 0.05, 0.15, 0.45,=
1.35=20
and 4.05 mg a.i./l for 55 days. Significant reduction of juvenile size was=
=20
observed even in the lowest test concentrations of 0.05 mg a.i./l, for=20
both glyphosate and Roundup. At 0.45 mg a.i./l, growth, fecundity and abor=
tion=20
rate was affected, but only in animals exposed to Roundup. At 1.35 and=20
4.05 mg a.i./l of both glyphosate and Roundup, significant negative effect=
s=20
were seen on most tested parameters, including mortality. D. magna was=20
adversely affected by a near 100% abortion rate of eggs and embryonic stag=
es at=20
1.35 mg a.i./l of Roundup. The results indicate that aquatic invertebrate=
=20
ecology can be adversely affected by relevant ambient concentrations of th=
is=20
major herbicide. We conclude that glyphosate and Roundup toxicity to=20
aquatic invertebrates have been underestimated and that current European=
=20

l, growth, fecundity and abortion rate was affected, but only in animals e=
xposed to Roundup. At 1.35 and 4.05 mg a.i./l of both glyphosate and Round=
up, significant negative effects were seen on most tested parameters, incl=
uding mortality. D. magna was adversely affected by a near 100% abortion r=
ate of eggs and embryonic stages at 1.35 mg a.i./l of Roundup. The results=
indicate that aquatic invertebrate ecology can be adversely affected by r=
elevant ambient concentrations of this major herbicide. We conclude that g=
lyphosate and Roundup toxicity to aquatic invertebrates have been underest=
imated and that current European Commission and US EPA toxicity classifica=
tion of these chemicals need to be revised.

The Bill Northey address is not effective; please send a short comment to t=
he Governor and Director NR Chuck Gipp. Here is a brief comment I composed.=
Earlier comments were given to agency representatives at June 28th meetin=
g.
Jim Redmond
Chuck Gipp, Director
Iowa Department of Natural Resources
I ask that your Department of Natural Resources in cooperation with the Dep=
t of Agriculture and Land Stewardship grant a Water Quality certificate to =
the Army Corps of Engineers for the Little Sioux Bend habitat project and f=
uture Corps habitat projects. State agencies along the Missouri River need=
to cooperate with the Corps rather than delay projects so crucial to survi=
val of native fish species. The State of Iowa has issued these WQ certific=
ates for 21 previous and similar projects. Only 3500 acres of habitat, how=
ever, have been created in the last decade, a sure sign that the delays rai=
sed by the Missouri Dept of Conservation set a terrible precedent for Iowa'=
s Dept of Natural Resources. I cannot envision a way for the Army Corps to=
escape a legal finding that they are not in compliance with federal court =
orders.
One of the most disturbing developments is that Iowa is using the newly cre=
ated Nutrient Reduction Strategy as a delaying mechanism for constructing h=
abitat that will pay great dividends in reducing nutrient run off into Iowa=
streams (including the Missouri River). This is an embarrassment for Iowa =
farmers , the recipients of tremendous Army corps disaster service in the 2=
011 flood.
The reasons for delay are over; the National Academy of Science study of Se=
dimentation has made it clear that the Corps methods are as conservative of=
budget and water quality as any other method.

Dept of Ag, Secretary Bill Northey, I ask that your Dept of Agriculture an=
d Land Stewardship cooperate with the Army Corps and the Iowa Dept of Natur=

A public meeting to discuss proposed development of shallow river habitat p=
rojects by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) was held on Friday, Jun=
e 28th at the Lewis & Clark State Park Visitor's Center.
[http://gallery.mailchimp.com/0af12fc2ab3fcc498129ee6e7/images/MO_River_Res=
toration_Program_Little_Sioux_Bend_Chute.jpg]
Iowa Rivers Revival urges the IA DNR to support the efforts of the USACE to=
continue restoration and mitigation projects that will re-establish wildli=
fe habitat to protect endangered and native species in the Missouri River V=
alley.
We want the USACE to partner with Iowa on restoration projects along the ri=
ver.
* These chute restoration projects would re-introduce at least a sembla=
nce of channel diversity in a small area of the river.
* Straightening the Missouri River helped farming in the river valley, =
but was a disaster for fish and wildlife habitat.
* Restoration of some channel diversity is badly needed for native fish=
species and is being done without adverse impacts on farming.
USACE shallow water restoration projects improve water quality and the func=
tion and value of the Missouri River.
Iowa's land and waters have multiple values - including economic and recrea=
tional incentives for Iowans and tourists to enjoy and engage in our outdoo=
rs.
* The restoration efforts not only provides critical habitat for endan=
gered and native species, it also provides healthy, quality of life opportu=
nities that will attract and retain young Iowans, helping to boost our loca=
l economies
Iowa agriculture interests are opposing USACE shallow water restoration eff=
orts in the Missouri River Valley based on the double-standard argument tha=
t agriculture interests are being asked to reduce sediment loads carrying n=
utrients into Iowa rivers and these recovery projects are also contributing=
to river nutrient loads - impacting hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. Additi=
onally, there is concern that the additional dredge material and sediment c=
ould increase the potential for future flood events.
* Nutrient (Nitrogen and Phosphorus) concentrations do not increase dow=
nstream of chutes after construction, and have little to no impact on nutri=
ents contributing to hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico.
* The benefits of these ecosystem restoration projects greatly outweigh=
the insignificant levels (0.01% or less of the Missouri and Mississippi Ri=
ver nutrient loads), in fact these restoration projects could help reduce t=
hese loads and improve current water quality conditions.
* The USACE have conducted studies determining that sediment dispersal =
does not impact flood stages, wildlife or habitat.
Please submit your comments today in support of these vital efforts to prot=
ect and restore Iowa's environment.
