MELVIN – The dairy producer responsible for a manure spill Sunday night near Melvin now estimates the spill volume at 1 million, not 200,000, gallons.

Workers at the High Plains Dairy in south central Osceola County dammed a dry creek bed to contain the manure. They worked Monday and Tuesday to pump the creek bed out and land apply manure to nearby fields.

Tuesday afternoon the DNR advised the producer to pump clean water into the streambed, flushing remaining manure downstream about three-fourths of a mile to the dam.

No fish have been lost because the creek was dry.

The spill occurred Sunday night after a pump failed at the dairy.

The DNR is onsite Wednesday, and will continue to monitor the cleanup. The DNR will consider appropriate enforcement action.
