Cedar Hills Sand Prairie Walk

A Prairie Walk on June 2nd at Cedar Hills Sand Prairie is being hosted
by the Cedar Prairie Group of the Sierra Club, Iowa Prairie Network
Region 3, and Friends of the Tallgrass Prairie Center at UNI.
Cedar Hills Sand Prairie is an 80-acre upland prairie underlain
with eolian (wind-blown) sand.  The site is a diverse mixture of
several prairie plant communities: dry prairie, mesic prairie, wet
prairie and a fen.  Thirty-five acres of the prairie has never been
plowed and the remaining acres have been undergoing succession back to
prairie for the past thirty years. The walk will be led by Daryl Smith
assisted by Bruce Stiles. Please join us for this outing to enjoy the
spring wildflowers and the cool season grasses. It was a late spring, now everything

is coming on like gang busters.  We will also discuss the origin of the prairie and
the recent history of the area.
Plan to meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Thunder Ridge Mall parking lot in
Cedar Falls and car pool/caravan to the prairie. For those who wish to
join the group at the site at 9:45 a.m., Cedar Hills Sand Prairie is located
at the intersection of Butler and Mark roads. Park on the east side of
Butler Road south of the intersection near the west entrance.  Bring water, sun

screen and insect repellant.
