Since I grew up in St.Louis metro, both the Missouri and the Mississippi are near and dear. When the Corps designed the system on the Missouri the levees were designed to be further apart. But because of pressure from local levee districts and people like the Ideckers, the levees were built closer together.

Since big ag and the barge industry are the reason it is the way it is the environmentalists and the river recreation people will have to work together to get this problem solved in a way that improves habitat.
