A C T I O N A L E R T TO: MIDWEST ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS FROM: CARL ZICHELLA, MIDWEST REGIONAL STAFF DIRECTOR, SIERRA CLUB DATE: 10-06-98 RE: YOU CAN HELP KILL THE OMNIBUS PARKS BILL -- CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TODAY! COULD BE DEBATED WEDNESDAY! An enormous and terrible omnibus parks and public lands bill (HR 4570), laced with amendments that undermine and eliminate wilderness from Alaska to Georgia, is moving toward the House floor. This bill could be debated as early as Wednesday (10/7). Happily, this bill is in trouble. Opposition from moderate Republicans and most Democrats is growing. However, many members of the House are still undecided and need to be called by their constituents. Your call at this critical moment could prevent this bill from coming to the floor, or if it does make it to the floor, provide the votes needed to defeat it! Please call your Representative and tell them to: Vote to defeat HR 4570, the Omnibus Parks and Public Lands Act. This bill removes federal protections from existing and defacto wilderness areas across the entire country. It is packed with terrible provisions, authored by some of the worst of the anti-environmental mem bers of the 105th Congress. Places like Hell's Canyon, Utah's San Rafael Swell, and Cumberland Island National Seashore, in Georgia, are all threatened. A raft of provisions authored by Rep Helen Chenoweth (R-ID) and others waive environmental laws and allow expedited "salvage" logging on numerous and potentially all national forests. Let's not let them get away with this! We can defeat this bill. If you are represented by a moderate Republican, tell your Representative to join Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) in opposing this bill. If enough oppose it, it may never make it to the floor. If it is brought up for a vote, we have an outstanding chance of winning. Please call today. Do not take even normally friendly members for granted.
