Subject: Canadian city elects anti-sprawl mayor

Winnipeg has elected a mayor whose platform includes major reforms to
reduce sprawl around this slow-growing prairie city of 618,000.

The new mayor, 41 year-old Glen Murray, has been an outspoken critic
of development policies in the Winnipeg metropolitan region during his
nine years as a city councillor.

He has called upon the provincial government to end generous public
subsidies for new infrastructure in the municipalities that surround
Winnipeg. He has also vowed to kill plans to spend $274-million on new
regional roads in Winnipeg that cater to suburban and ex-urban
development.

What makes Glen Murray's election suprising to many is that he is the
first openingly gay mayor in Canada. His main opponent was a 51
year-old local business man who believes that the cure for sprawl is
simply to cut taxes (Winnipeg's property taxes are amongst the highest in
Canada).

If Murray can deliver on his promises, Winnipeg should develop some of
the most progressive anti-sprawl policies in Canada. Stay tuned!
