DNR lax in policing water standards, activists charge
Iowa's Department of Natural Resources has not been doing its job to enforce
the federal Clean Water Act, say two activists in the new edition of the
"Iowa News & Views" cable television series, which appears the weeks of
April 12 and 19 throughout the state. David Riley, chair of Iowa City-based
Environmental Advocates, and Cedar Rapids lawyer Wally Taylor discuss their
efforts to force regulators to uphold the law with guest host Derek Maurer.
"The problem with the DNR is that they knuckle under to industry," said
Taylor, who recently filed a lawsuit in federal court to force regulators to
develop standards for pollutants entering Iowa streams and rivers.
Environmental Advocates recently filed notice of its intent to sue Iowa City
if the city does not reduce pollutants it discharges into the Iowa River.
