CLEAN AIR ALERT! CALL THE WHITE HOUSE FOR CLEAN AIR NOW!

Clean Air Call-In Day: Monday April 12, 1999

QUICK BACKGROUND:
Air pollution is causing a public health crisis in the United States. During
the 1998 smog season, there were more than 5,200 violations of EPA's health
standard for smog in 32 states across the nation.

The two largest sources of smog pollution are dirty power plants and
automobiles. The electric power industry and the auto industry are each
responsible for close to a third of smog pollution. These same industries
are two of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases that scientists have
linked to global warming.

To make the air safe to breathe and curb global warming, we must
significantly cut pollution from these two sources. The Clinton
Administration is currently facing a few critical decisions that could do
just that.

1. The Clinton Administration is considering a proposal to reduce pollution
from cars and light trucks that would cut auto pollution by up to 89%. The
technology exists to build cleaner cars - The White House should require
automakers to make clean cars for the entire nation.

2. The Administration is considering action to reduce smog pollution in our
National Parks like the Grand Canyon, Acadia, and the Smokies. Not only does
smog in our National Parks reduce our visibility of the scenic overlooks, but
also it threatens the health of park visitors. The EPA's proposed "haze
rule" will reduce the amount of smog pollution coming from all pollution
sources in these areas, especially dirty power plants.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Call the White House and tell President Clinton and Vice
President Gore to support public health and clean up air pollution by:
1. adopting tough new clean car rules that would reduce the amount of auto
pollution;
2. supporting the EPA's proposed rule to reduce smog pollution in our
National Parks.
