A few transportation subscribers to this forum have commented or asked
questions about transportation effects on wildlife. The following web site
is for the upcoming conference on International Wildlife Ecology and
Transportation. Even if you are not able to attend this conference, you
should make an effort to obtain the proceedings. Sponsored by the Florida
Department of Transportation, the US Forest Service and Defenders of
Wildlife and this year, the Montana DOT, the 1999 conference will focus on
bear highway mortality. Much of the conference highlights the problems of
habitat fragmentation by highways and rail systems. The effects of
transportation on wildlife from bats to salmon, from the Netherlands to
South Africa will be presented during the three day conference. Some of
the innovative ideas to eliminate or reduce the problems are worth passing
along to your state highway departments. The full agenda is included on
the site.
