Grand Canyon-area development approved
By The Associated Press
PHOENIX - The head of the U.S. Forest Service on Wednesday approved a
plan that would allow the construction of hotel rooms, housing and stores
outside Grand Canyon National Park. Chief of the Forest Service Mike
Dombeck rebuffed 25 appeals filed by opponents ranging from the city of
Williams to northern Arizona business leaders to the Sierra Club. His
decision ends the decision process by the Forest Service.
Scottsdale developer Tom DePaolo plans to build the $330 million Canyon
Forest Village with 1,200 hotel rooms and 270,000 square feet of retail
space along the highway into the Grand Canyon's South Rim. It would also
include 20 acres to house park workers.
Forest Service officials approved the plan because they hope it will
reduce traffic in the park and ease the need for employee housing.
Northern Arizona businesses, however, contend the rooms and stores will
hurt their businesses.
