The Wildlife Damage Review is an organization located in Tucson,
Arizona. In 91 it was founded by four women who were tired of seeing
the USDA Animal Damage Control unit slaughter thousands of so called
predator or
Timesnuisance
animals for ranchers and other individuals. Clarke Abbey, Edward's
wife is one of the founding women. They have brought the publics eye
to the attention of the ADC's practices. So much so that the ADC
decided to change its name to Wildlife Services as to appear friendlier
and more humane. They are much like any other non-profit. They
produce a newsletter which I believe is quarterly. I became a supporter
in late 91 and have watched the organization grow in size and
prominence.
Their mission statement:
Wildlife Damage Review's mission is to bring much-needed scrutiny to
the federal Animal Damage Control program (ADC) administered under the
U.S. Department of Agriculture. This tax payer supported program was
made official by Congress in 1931 in order to "eradicate, suppress and
control" wildlife species for the sake of agricultural interests.
Driven by predator prejudice, ADC is out of step with the times and
ecosystem science, and unaccountable in its processes and
responsibilities. Due to ADC's absolute reluctance to change direction
toward a program which provides non-lethal services to correct poor
animal husbandry practices, WDR's goal is to abolish this secretive
program and the mentality behind it, a "predator prejudice," which
fuels the use of traps, snares, aerial gunning and poisons on
America's wildlife.

Rex,
Could you or someone tell us more about the Wildlife Damage Review. Is
it a
publication or an organization? Is it concerned about damage caused by
humans
to wildlife (as would appear to be the case from the discussions you
posted)?
I ask this because, if I recall correctly, the U.S. Dept. of
Agriculture has
a notorious program of wildlife damage control, which exterminates
large
numbers of coyotes, prairie dogs, and other species, as a service to
cattle
and sheep ranchers.
